In a talk titled "Undiscerning Mirrors," X. A. Li will discuss the aesthetic possibilities of deep neural networks given both their architectural constraints and societal context.

Julie Zhu will talk about her obsession with the sound of writing and drawing, and how it's played an important role in her interdisicplinary collaborations, from chamber compositions to video installations to spatial audio experiments.

Hunter Brown will demonstrate how he incorporates machine learning techniques into the control of sound synthesis algorithms implemented in a custom SuperCollider instrument he uses for free improvisation.

Hugo Flores García will discuss his research in machine learning (ML) and music, where he designs artist-centered interfaces for creative expression through sound.

Experimental Sound Studio presents a pop-up performance with Marvin Tate and Hunter Diamond. The performance will respond to Turn of the Tide, a site-specific immersive art installation created for EXPO CHICAGO by the artist Jennifer Wen Ma.

The Musicality of Poetry is an exhibition by the multidisciplinary artist and arts activist Marvin Tate. The exhibition will feature recent visual work by Marvin. The closing reception will feature longtime collaborator LeRoy Bach.

BOUNDARYMIND is an evening-length electroacoustic sound piece and aggregating installation that explores and transgresses the geographical, cultural, psychological, and musical boundaries that impact how we share our past, present, and future selves with others.

Developed collaboratively over the course of eight years by Linda Jankowska and Katherine Young, the project will also present video art by Kera Mackenzie and a performative sculpture by Molly Roth Scranton.

This time, Ewart is joined by the group Quasar: Mankwe Ndosi and Vincent Davis. Douglas R. Ewart comes together with Renèe Baker (Violin, Viola and Voice) and Lou Mallozzi (electronics) in a trio called Sonic Bamboo Rhizomes for a special performance entitled Water Wise Bamboo Free dedicated to Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians Elders Lester Helmar Lashley, LaRoy Wallace McMillan, and Reginald "Reggie" Willis. This is the first in a series of performances presented as part of his current exhibition Douglas R. Ewart: A Retrospective at ESS’s Audible Gallery.

As an extension of its weekly OPTION series, Experimental Sound Studio is pleased to partner with the Green Mill to present Rob Mazurek's Desert Encrypts: Volume 1 Record Release (Astral Spirit Records).

This year's WAVE FRONT artist-in-residence is Brian Chu Yin-Woo (龢wo4) from Hong Kong. Before the end of his residency in Chicago, Brian will play a solo improvisation set, followed by a short presentation sharing insights into the underground music scene in his hometown and the ways in which it has inspired the ideas behind his creative process.

Experimental Sound Studio is proud to present The Bridge [2.1] for a performance and live recording in the studio as a concluding event in their 3 day micro-residency. Their collaborative efforts titled, Crying Out Loud, is an improvisational quintet ensemble featuring Dan Bitney (drums), Christian Bopp (trombone, voice), Rob Frye (woodwinds, electronics), Jayve Montgomery (woodwinds, electronics) and Simon Sieger (trombone, tuba, accordion, piano).

On January 31 ESS presents a prototype of a larger format Fugal Systems music series scheduled to debut at Experimental Station in fall 2019. Participating in this preview iteration are Billie Howard, Ayanna Woods, Angel Bat Dawid, and Adam Vida. Join us for this unique, immersive live sound collage that will take over the entire ESS building.

In the final evening of Oscillations performances, composer, musician, and puppeteer Divyamaan Sahoo will present his new work “Flatland” and Les Chanteuses du Rien (Elaine Lemieux, Hanna Brock, and Sara Zalek) will present an immersive improvisation utilizing the entire ESS building.

In the second concert from the Oscillations series, KG Price will create new polyphonic compositions using turntables. In the second set, Riley Leitch and Kelley Sheehan present their evolving project zP42, a site specific improvisation utilizing max msp.

Eduardo Rosario will present his open form composition entitled On Circulation, followed by Ben Roidl-Ward and Ted Moore with a new work exploring multimedia performance.

Solo sets by accordionist Ted Reichman and pianist Håvard Wiik.
