Solo sets by accordionist Ted Reichman and pianist Håvard Wiik.
Ted Reichman is an accordionist, keyboard player, and composer. He works as a film composer and record producer in addition to teaching at the New England Conservatory of Music. At Wesleyan University, Reichman studied with Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton, who began hiring Reichman for concerts and recordings when Reichman was 19. Reichman went on to work extensively with Braxton including the production of the opera “Trillium M” and the first recordings of Braxton’s Ghost Trance Music. After moving to New York in 1994, he became involved in jazz, with Ben Perowsky and Chris Speed, improvisation with Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, and Eugene Chadbourne, Jewish music with David Krakauer and Roberto Rodriguez, alternative country with Sue Garner and Laura Cantrell, and rock and roll, with Elysian Fields, Paul Simon, Sam Phillips, and Shivaree. In 1995, he founded a concert series at alt.coffee, where he began his over 15-year association with world-renowned composer John Hollenbeck. performing worldwide with Hollenbeck’s Claudia Quintet. Reichman then became the original curator of Tonic, which would grow into one of the world’s major venues for new music and avant-rock.
Reichman’s work as a composer includes the critically acclaimed albums Emigré (Tzadik), and My Ears are Bent (Skirl). His work in film music includes original scores for the feature films “Rick,” “The Memory Thief,” and many documentaries, including “Dear Mandela” and “Ahead of Time.” Reichman was a 2010 Fellow at the Sundance Institute Documentary Composers Lab.
Reichman’s recent work as a record producer includes two critically acclaimed albums by post-Morricone pop orchestra Tredici Bacci. In 2010, Reichman joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music where he leads student ensembles in the Contemporary Improvisation and Jazz departments and provides individual instruction in accordion technique, composition and improvisation. Håvard Wiik (1975) studied jazz and composition at the jazz department at Trondheim Music Conservatory. He is one of Norway’s most respected and profiled jazz pianists. He has for more than a decade been a member and founder of several the important Norwegian and
international ensembles (Atomic, Håvard Wiik Trio,Side A,Motif,Der Lange Schatten & Free Fall). He has toured all over the world with these groups. In 2004 he had the honourably role as ’artist in residence’ at the Molde international Jazzfestival in Norway. In
2006 he also received one the greatest acknowledgement for a Norwegian jazz musician, the Kongsberg Jazzfestival’s ‘Vital-prize. In 2007 he relocated to Berlin where he works with people like Axel Dörner, Michael Thieke, Tobias Delius, Jan Roder, Tristan Honsinger, Christian Lillinger and Antonio Borghini.
