Announcing the Fall 2021 ESS Curatorial Fellow: James Gui
In its second iteration, the ESS Curatorial Fellowship seeks to create space for the exploration of frameworks, strategies, and structures for connecting artists and audiences. The Fellowship additionally gives ESS an opportunity to develop a relationship with curators and bring fresh artistic vision in, furthering the mission of the organization to support a broad, creative exploration of sound. We are thrilled to introduce James Gui as this fall’s recipient, and are eager to present with him a slate of three concerts and accompanying analysis.
About James Gui
I'm James, a freelance writer and photographer currently based in Brooklyn! I've written for Bandcamp, The Wire, Slant, The Quietus, primarily about music scenes in America and Asia. I have a biweekly radio slot on datafruits.fm, featuring a hyperactive mix of dance, punk, hip hop and their subgenres.
Formerly a college radio DJ (shoutout to WHRB!), I'm also interested in the intersection of DIY music culture and resistance of marginalized groups across the globe. Inspired by the creative efforts of Club Matryoshka, I hope to explore the limits and possibilities of online musical experiences as ESS's Fall Curatorial Fellow this year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I got my start organizing online parties with my college radio station, and after graduating even hosted a rave in MapleStory, an old MMORPG.
With ESS, I hope to feature many of the overly-online musicians that are pushing the boundaries of music across the globe, as well as other sound artists that I've encountered in my musical journey
