Untitled (expeditions) is a series of images exploring moments on the periphery of the chaos of daily life. The work brings to the fore images of memories or reflections on the passage of time, and wanderings of not only place but mind. The photographs are an amalgam of moods, colors, and emotions—images steeped in the tones of memory, loss, and a visceral sublime. Hargrave injects the work with subjectivity through the liberal manipulation of color and color processes, investigating how fugitive photographic substrates literally color memory.
Archiving the Moment: Improvisation and the Malachi Ritscher Collection is a panel discussion and performance that will take place in the Claudia Cassidy Theatre at the Chicago Cultural Center from 7-9pm on Friday November 15th. Curated and moderated by ethnomusicologist Will Faber, the panel will feature philosopher Bruce Ellis Benson, composer/improviser/educator Douglas Ewart, and DJ Kimberly Seibel (Killing the Vibe). Performers will include pianist/ARPist James Baker, multi-instrumentalist Douglas Ewart, and bassonist/composer Katherine Young.
Will Faber is a musician and researcher whose work engages the interactions of melodies, noise, rhythms, and repetition. He is currently a PhD student in ethnomusicology at the University of Chicago and plays in the group El is a Sound of Joy.
At ESS he will perform three pieces for guitars, flutes, metallic percussion, electronics, and shortwave radio that draw on themes of memory and history, and explorations of critical and imagined geographies.
