As part of the Chicago/Spain Residency program organized by ESS, the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain, and Acción Cultural Española, ESS hosts an evening of presentations from 2023 artists-in-residence Ginebra Raventos (Spain) and Paul Hertz (Chicago). Join us for this evening of boundary-pushing work!

Ginebra Raventos will be presenting a spatial sound installation created from experiments at ESS during her residency, exploring the psychoacoustic phenomenon of phantom words.

Ginebra will also have a live sound poetry performance. "Saturn behind us: the ice, the glass, the emptiness, the virgin act" is a sound poem composed of collective and anonymous voices (un)drawing everything around the idea of Saturn. It is a research into oral histories and the idea of the myth of origin. The result is a sound piece made up of a single voice speaking, narrating, and reciting.

Link to the sound poem.

Paul Hertz will be presenting some of his archival pigment prints in the gallery and showing the algorithmic animation Campos | Temporales. The music for Campos | Temporales, by Christopher Walczak, was recorded at ESS in September 2023. The prints and the animation were created by transforming audio signals into pixel values and writing them to a space-filling curve to create images. For his residency, Paul will be making sound from images and making images from sound.

At the close of the evening, if the moon smiles upon them, Ginebra and Paul will conjure up a collaborative performance.

This project is a collaboration between ESS, the Embassy of Spain, and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).
