A Grid Against The Sky aims to fill the interior volume of the Fern Room at the Lincoln Park Conservatory, organizing the air molecules into evolving cross-hatched patterns. These patterns are determined by the complex harmonics of a set of conjoined metal instruments called the Wall of Metals. Pre-recorded performances of the Wall are slowed down, reversed, and otherwise mixed and manipulated in real time, continuously. This project is a response to the harmonies and dissonances that hover in the balance between the room’s architecture and its fragile, organic contents.  Stephan Moore acknowledges the talent, labor, assistance, and support of Alex Inglizian, KG Price, Hanna Brock, Noah Modie, and Sarah Warren, which were essential to the creation of this piece.

Stephan Moore is an audio artist, sound designer, composer, improviser, teacher, and curator based in Chicago. His creative work manifests as sound installations, scores for collaborative performances, algorithmic compositions, improvisational outbursts, and sound designs for unusual circumstances. He is the president of Isobel Audio, LLC, and the curator of Sonic Innovations at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. Evidence, his long-standing project with Scott Smallwood, has performed widely and released several recordings over the past 15 years. He toured for several years as the music coordinator and sound engineer of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and has worked with Pauline Oliveros, Anthony McCall, and Animal Collective, among others. He is a lecturer of sound art and sound design in the Department of Radio, Television and Film at Northwestern University.
